Mongolia Prime Minister Uchral's 100 Days: Wins, Inflation, and Energy Risks

On the eve of the Naadam holidays, Prime Minister Nyam-Osoryn Uchral capped his first 100 days in office with an impressive scorecard.

Cheaper financing at Oyu Tolgoi, faster business registration, $545 million in investment agreements, 3.1 trillion MNT ($865 million) in tax relief and a new digital government platform all suggest a government moving with unusual speed. 

Yet speed is not the same as reform. The real test is whether these headlines outlast the news cycle and reshape how Mongolia’s economy actually works.

In a televised interview, Mongolia Prime Minister Uchral said Oyu Tolgoi must deliver a 53% economic return to Mongolia, a threshold the project has not reached in the 17 years since the investment agreement was signed.
