Mongolia’s MPP Feud Complicates the 2027 Presidential Race
Six months into his tenure, Prime Minister Nyam-Osoryn Uchral faces the same problem that brought him to power, keeping the ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) factions from turning on one another.
On September 16, Uchral dismissed Justice and Internal Affairs Minister Sainbuyangiin Amarsaikhan and ordered the removal of senior and mid-level officials under the ministry.
The government said the ministry and its agencies could no longer operate normally while allegations surrounding them were being investigated, and that the facts had to be established.
The dispute had already widened into a political confrontation. Amarsaikhan accused former prime minister Gombojavyn Zandanshatar of conspiring with law-enforcement officials over illegal mining and orchestrating a campaign to discredit him.
Zandanshatar denied the allegations, describing them as political retaliation after Amarsaikhan’s dismissal from his cabinet in 2025.
The claims remain unproven.
