Mongolia Chooses Gobi Renewables to Power Oyu Tolgoi Mine

For thirteen years Oyu Tolgoi has bought every kilowatt from China, about $140 million a year.
Mongolia has long promised to supply the mine itself, and in September 2026 it held the auction.
A consortium led by domestic conglomerate MCS International won with a bid of 7.90 American cents per kilowatt-hour, nearly 20% below the 9.7-cent ceiling.
The paperwork, for once, looks proper. The energy ministry published the invitation in August 2026. It demanded 99.5% reliability, proven technology, a Mongolian majority and a foreign state stake below a quarter.
