Talks between Rio Tinto and the Mongolian government have resumed, with both sides aiming for a framework agreement by April and a report to parliament soon after.

Prime Minister Gombojavyn Zandanshatar has made Mongolia’s demand for 60 percent of the project’s economic return the centerpiece of his position on Oyu Tolgoi.

Whether the April timeline holds is uncertain. What is clear is that Rio Tinto now faces its most consequential renegotiation since the 2009 investment agreement.
