Mongolia Pre-Trial Detention and How Soviet-Era Legal Procedures Shape Politics and Prosecutions
Police detained Tumurbaataryn Shinebayar, a scandal-driven journalist, on October 10. Next day, a court ordered 30 days of detention on a blackmail complaint from the Presidential Office media chief, a charge her lawyer says no court has ever ruled on. The complaint is disputed. She was released under a restriction order and remains under investigation.
Previously, this precedent was set with Narangiin Unurtsetseg, a polarizing investigative journalist. She was convicted in 2024 and sentenced to nearly five years for tax evasion, money laundering and holding state secrets, then freed by presidential pardon. Her defenders call it retaliation for her reporting on official corruption.
