Sangajavyn Bayartsogt: The Controversial Strategist Behind Mongolia’s Opposition Power Play

Sangajavyn Bayartsogt has spent three decades mastering the ins and outs of Mongolian politics. Elected to parliament five times, he helped draft the country's democratic constitution in 1992.

On May 6th, the opposition Democratic Party (DP) appointed the 59-year-old veteran as its Secretary-General. By making this move, the party is effectively firing the starting gun for the 2027 and 2028 election cycles, signaling Bayartsogt’s appointment is about long-term strategy. 

The timing is deliberate. Under the leadership of businessman-turned-politician Odongiin Tsogtgerel, the DP has recently surpassed the ruling Mongolian People's Party in public polling for the first time in years.
