Ending years of drought in major baseload capacity additions, the Municipality of Ulaanbaatar is set to break ground on the Fifth Thermal Power Plant (TPP-5).

The decision represents a bold attempt by UB Mayor Khishgeegiin Nyambaatar to separate the capital’s energy security from the central government’s policy stagnation, motivated by a severe physical crisis in the power grid and the firm deadline of the upcoming electoral cycle.

Mongolia plans to build a new power plant in Ulaanbaatar.

The commencement of earthworks in February 2026, confirmed by city officials, follows the signing of a definitive agreement in 2025.
